Tallinn 2010

Sixth International Conference on Music Theory

Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre

October 14-16

The conference will be dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Heinrich Schenker's death, as well as the 200th anniversary of birth of Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann. The theme of the conference will be "Hierarchic Analysis: A Quest for Priorities". The best known (although not the only) type of hierarchic analysis is Schenkerian analysis. The issues we would like to discuss are as follows:

  • What are the priorities of Schenkerian analysis? Is it primarily a science or an art or ideology? Being technically a kind of hierarchic contrapuntal analysis, which aspect - harmony, melody, rhythm (meter) of form (design) - it has as its secondary priority?
  • Is there only one - the traditional, "orthodox" - Schenkerian analysis, or are there several, with their different priorities?
  • In view of a certain element of subjectivity and irrationality inherent in traditional Schenkerian analysis, is it possible to develop its deep insights in the context of a logically non-contradictory, scientifically and historically well-founded music theory?
  • In what way can other types of analysis (linguistics, cognitive etc.) contribute to the development of Schenkerian analysis?
