In the fall of 2008 the musicological societies of Norway and Sweden decided to organize a network in order to facilitate cooperation between music theorists in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
Members of the board met in Helsinki in September to clarify basic issues. It was agreed that musical analysis and meta-theory ought to be situated at the core of the somewhat nebulous concept of music theory. Further, it became clear that the relationships between theory, history and performance should be a major concern. Finally, the hope was expressed that the network will serve as a source of inspiration to teachers of music theory at all levels.
It should be added that the network will be designed to attract theorists who focus their interests on Western music, be it classical, jazz or pop, while being open to scholars from other areas.
